Camille Claudel

Camille Claudel was a french sculpture who is known for many fine sculptures. I personally like her sculpture Perseus and the Gorgon. I enjoyed this sculpture because it is a mythical creature and i find it facinating how she created this sculpture. It is a pretty graphic sculpture with the hero holding the head of the monster.

I chose this sculpture because of the first impression I got when I saw it. This piece demonstrates so much emotion. The man appears to be grabbing something that he is loosing. I think what makes this piece is the way it’s positioned and the facial expression. This piece remains in Burussels

Perseus and the Gorgon is a marble sculpture that was made in 1902 by Camille Claudel. It is the only large marble sculpture made by the artist. It shows him beheading Medusa and looking at her through his shield to avoid looking in her eyes. This sculpture took 4 years to complete and as it stands today, the shield is not there anymore.

Camille Claude was a French sculptor during the early 1900s. She started working in the famous sculptor, Auguste Rodin's workshop in 1884. She was his model for many of his works. "The Mature Age" was the piece that drew Rodin and Claudel apart. When Rodin saw it, he was very angry and stopped all of his work with her. Camille's brother interpreted this work as an allegory of her break with Rodin, after he refused to marry her. This is one of Claudel's major pieces which took 6 years to complete (1894-1900). There is one made in plaster and another made in bronze at 2 museums in Paris.

Camille Claudel was a french sculptor. One of her more notable works is titled 'The Waltz'. This was originally made in plaster but was later casted to bronze. It depicts two people, a man and a women dancing. The women is supposed to symbolize Camille and the man is supposed to be Auguste Rodin. This was her mentor and employer who she had a love affair with. The piece is supposed to depict them. I like how the piece can be tied into a real life event.

Camille Claudel created "The Mature Age" in 1894–1900. There are two versions of the sculpture, one made of plaster and cast in bronze and the other made of solid bronze and is currently on exhibit the Musée d'Orsay and at the Musée Rodin in Paris, France. The sculpture comes when Claudel and Rodin's relationship ended after he refused to marry Camille. She takes her anguish in losing her lover and transforms it into this piece, which allegedly made Rodin very upset. While she is on the floor, begging him to come back, he is turned around to return to his long time girlfriend, "Rose". She deems this work an "autobiographical" and explains all of this in letters she wrote to her brother, and poet, Paul Claudel.

The wave is made of onyx marble and bronze. It has three idetnical figures bent at the knees at the sight of a wave about to break over their heads.  Some say it is an image of destiny which is a theme on several other works by artists during this time period. Claudel liked to ply with color and the natural polychromy of materials.  Here there is a mix of bronze and green stone.  This work is influenced by Japanses art and the famous wood block print.
