The Rape of Proserpina is sculpted of marble by Bernini between 1621 and 1622. It depicts the Abduction of Proserpina when she is seized and taken to the underworld by the god Pluto. During the first World War, it was covered with a box and sandbags for protection. I chose this sculpture because it is similar to another we looked at in class where the woman is turning into a tree. Bernini also sculpted this when he was only 23. The detail is incredible and especially at Bernini’s young age.
