George Segal

Gay Liberation by George Segal was commissioned in 1980 by a wealthy arts patron to commemorate a historic LGBTQ+ moment, the stonewall raid, riots, and the movement towards legalized gay night clubs. The sculptures are made out of cast bronze and depict a male-male couple standing and a female-female couple sitting on a bench, both in leisurely positions. This shows how after their relationships became legal, the lives of gay couples became more relaxed and joyous. Although it is specified that these couples are gay couples, their faces and bodies seem androgynous to me, perhaps showing that even in the 1980s there was still hesitation towards making artwork about LGBTQ+ individuals. On the other hand, I do appreciate that they are not overly-sexualized in anyway and depict "normal" individuals.
