David Smith

David Smith, Cubi XXVII, March 1965. Stainless steel, 111 3/8 x 87 3/4 x 34 inches (282.9 x 222.9 x 86.4 cm)

David Smith was an abstract expressionist sculptor and painter. Smith was never trained as a sculptor but instead learned to work with metal while working as a riveter and welder at automotive factories. He forged metal, welded machine parts, and other objects he found. His last series of work contained 28 sculptures of free standing stainless steel, one of which was the Cubi XXVII. The sculptures resemble geometric cubes and cylinders of varying size. For these sculptures he used the outdoor light to bring the stainless steel to life, stating that on a dull day they could look blue, or they can reflect golden rays of sun.
