Roland 'David' Smith, is an American artist who was born in Indiana in 1906, and died at the age of 59, in 1965.  He often worked in series, and one of his major works is called the Cubis. This specific sculpture, was among one of his last pieces before his death. 'Cubis' consisted of stainless steel with a hand-brushed finish reminiscent of the gestural strokes of the painting, Abstract Expressionist. Davids works can be seen in the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Storm King Art Center holds 13 of his sculptures. An interesting fact about David is that he attended Notre Dame for college, but left after 2 weeks because there were no art classes.
