David Smith

David Smith, born Roland David Smith, is an American artist known for his sculptures. Throughout his life he also drew and painted, however, his major works consisted of usually large stainless steel sculptures. This piece, named Australia, was at the time Smiths largest piece. It was made by welding pieces of heavy steel together, even though it appears almost weightless. Some believe the piece is a kangaroo leaping, due to the name Australia, however, in my opinion it almost looks like a figure shrugging with their hands up, or even Edward scissorhands.
