David Smith: Agricola I

Agricola I is an abstract painted steel sculpture located in Washington D.C.. Agricola means farmer in Latin and this sculpture, created from old farm tools, represents a farmer holding tools. There is a series of 16 sculptures that express Smith's concern with farming in upper New York State. I chose this sculpture because it is painted, rather than plain. He also uses the sculpture as a metaphor which gives it and the rest of the works in the series a larger meaning. Many sculptures and pieces of art are hard to decipher, but this one is clear to see what it represents.
