David Smith
Tanktoem VII by David Smith is currently on view at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, NY. Smith created the sculpture in 1960, and it is made out of painted steel, which was Smith's favorite medium to sculpt. Perhaps this is due to his history of working with the same substance when he was employed in the automotive industry, and started sculpting with scrap metal and machine parts. Smith also wanted his metal sculptures to be on view in the outdoors, "To develop the illusion of surface and depth". Smith made use of geometric form, including cubical and spherical shapes, with additional "delicate" curving lines. The differing shades in Tanktoem VII enhance Smith's goal to introduce depth into his sculpture.
