David Smith
DAVID SMITH as he was named MAN OF STEEL was the most important sculptor associated with the New York School. As a grandchild of a blacksmith, he spent a lot of time in his grandpa atelier where he learned to love steel as he said: "Now steel, that's a natural thing for me,". He also called his work place Terminal Iron Works because it was more a machine shop than an artist's studio. Smith learned welding riveting skills from an automobile company where he worked in summer time. he used these skills to create balanced steel cubic sculptures which he was known by. he has many art work as Cubi X 1963, Cubi XII 1963, Agricola 1952, Hudson river landscape 1951 and Tanktotem I 1952. he died on a car accident in 1965.
