David Smith
David Smith was the first sculptor to use welded metal in his work of arts. Smith had the skill to weld metal because he worked at an automobile factory before becoming a sculptor and his grandfather was a blacksmith. I think his work is extraordinary because his sculptures look so simple, yet it could have several different meanings. When I look at this particular sculpture I imagine the theme is about balance. More specifically, I interpret the little disc on the bottom as a meaning of how a little thing in your life can provide you complete stability.
