Vik Muniz
Vik Muniz is a Brazilian artist who makes art out of "garbage" or unexpected materials. Medusa Marinara (1999) takes a familiar sight (leftover spaghetti and sauce) and turns it into the face of the terrifying Medusa. As with other portraits he has done, the picture is found in the empty space and the filled space within the craft, unlike other sculptures who focus on medium alone. With spaghetti hair, and sauce eyes, the Medusa Marinara is not the first time Muniz has used edible medium; he has also used chocolate sauce and sugar in other portraits. You might want to look at your Sunday-Night pasta dinner plate a little differently after looking at this portrait.
