David Smith

Image result for Hudson River Landscape

David Smith was an American abstract sculptor. When he was younger he worked with automobiles making him very comfortable with metal which became the common medium for his works. His most well known works are his abstract, steel, geometric sculptures. One of the most groundbreaking things Smith has contributed to art was his absence of a core in the sculpture. Without having a perceivable core, the sculptures he made looked almost alive. The artwork shown above is titled the Hudson River Landscape. This is considered kinetic art which means the effect of the artwork depends on movement of the viewer. You can tell from this picture that there is no centered core and it gives it a more realistic feeling. It is made of welded steel and is about 48" x  72" x 17".
