David Smith was an American abstract sculpture during the 20th
century. David was unique in that he was the first sculpture to work with
welded metal. He also was a brilliant painter, he would derive his work from
brush to arc. In his earlier years he worked in a body shop and on a car
assembly line that may have helped open the door to his abstract fabrication with
metal. His famous works consists of abstract geometric shapes that speak for
themselves. This piece is called CUBI VI which was among the last set of works David
produced. It was completed in 1963 and resides now in Israel Museum in
Jerusalem, and is a brilliant stainless-steel sculpture. I chose this piece due
to how sharp and clean the edges are, as well as the steel itself.
